Run 1 Complete!

Alrighty, here are some initial thoughts:

1) These things look weird with shorts.

2) When I first stepped outside, I had to keep looking down because I felt like I was barefoot. You can really feel all of the ground below your feet (but not in a bad way, you're protected).

3) Did a short run today. Everything I've read about the shoes says that they will "wake up" a bunch of joints and muscles in your feet and calves, so you should take it slow.

4) It's a much different experience than in shoes. Different parts of your feet are reacting to the surface at different times, helping you to anchor and to push off or grip (yes, grip!). This is especially true on uneven terrain (for me this was sidewalk today, although I did hop over into the grass a few times because it felt cool). Definitely want to try trail running in these.

5) I do need to learn how to run in these things (or run properly in general); initially, I was trying to roll my foot, I'm just not sure that's the way to go (of course, as stated earlier, I know nothing about running). By the end of my run, I was mainly on the balls of my feet be-bopping around; it was a really cool feeling.

6) We'll see how my legs feel tomorrow, but I'm hoping to go out again and run on Tuesday.

T-bone (and anyone else interested), I'm sure you have questions about them that I haven't thought of, so fire away!

Better Late Than Never

Best thanksgiving email ever!

From: Marney

As you all know a fabulous Thanksgiving Dinner does not make itself. I need to ask each of you to help by bringing something to complete the meal. I truly appreciate your offers to assist with the meal preparation.

Now, while I do have quite a sense of humor and joke around all the time, I COULD NOT BE MORE SERIOUS when I am providing you with your Thanksgiving instructions and orders. I am very particular, so please perform your task EXACTLY as I have requested and read your portion very carefully. If I ask you to bring your offering in a container that has a lid, bring your offering in a container WITH A LID, NOT ALUMINUM FOIL! If I ask you to bring a serving spoon for your dish, BRING A SERVING SPOON, NOT A SOUP SPOON! And please do not forget anything.

All food that is to be cooked should already be prepared, bring it hot and ready to serve, warm or room temp. These are your ONLY THREE options. Anything meant to be served cold should, of course, already be cold.

HJB—Dinner wine

The Mike Byron Family
1. Turnips in a casserole with a lid and a serving spoon. Please do not fill the casserole all the way up to the top, it gets too messy. I know this may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but most of us hate turnips so don’t feel like you a have to feed an army.
2. Two half gallons of ice cream, one must be VANILLA, I don’t care what the other one is. No store brands please. I did see an ad this morning for Hagan Daz Peppermint Bark Ice Cream, yum!! (no pressure here, though).
3. Toppings for the ice cream.
4. A case of bottled water, NOT gallons, any brand is ok.

The Bob Byron Family
1. Green beans or asparagus (not both) in a casserole with a lid and a serving spoon. If you are making the green beans, please prepare FOUR pounds, if you are making asparagus please prepare FIVE pounds. It is up to you how you wish to prepare them, no soupy sauces, no cheese (you know how Mike is), a light sprinkling of toasted nuts, or pancetta, or some EVOO would be a nice way to jazz them up.
2. A case of beer of your choice (I have Coors Light and Corona) or a bottle of clos du bois chardonnay (you will have to let me know which you will bring prior to 11/22).

The Lisa Byron Chesterford Family
1. Lisa as a married woman you are now required to contribute at the adult level. You can bring an hors d’ouvres. A few helpful hints/suggestions. Keep it very light, and non-filling, NO COCKTAIL SAUCE, no beans of any kind. I think your best bet would be a platter of fresh veggies and dip. Not a huge platter mind you (i.e., not the plastic platter from the supermarket).

The Michelle Bobble Family
1. Stuffing in a casserole with a serving spoon. Please make the stuffing sans meat.
2. 2.5-3 qts. of mashed squash in a casserole with a lid and serving spoon
3. Proscuitto pin wheel – please stick to the recipe, no need to bring a plate.
4. A pie knife

The June Davis Family
1. 15 LBS of mashed potatoes in a casserole with a serving spoon. Please do not use the over-size blue serving dish you used last year. Because you are making such a large batch you can do one of two things: put half the mash in a regulation size casserole with lid and put the other half in a plastic container and we can just replenish with that or use two regulation size casserole dishes with lids. Only one serving spoon is needed.
2. A bottle of clos du bois chardonnay

The Amy Misto Family (why do I even bother she will never read this)
1. A pumpkin pie in a pie dish (please use my silver palate recipe) no knife needed.
2. An apple pie in a pie dish, you can use your own recipe, no knife needed.

Looking forward to the 28th!!

Well, here we go. The great experiment begins soon.

Update: Been wearing them almost all afternoon (not running other than chasing the little one); so far, so good.

A Sobering Thought for Thanksgiving

LINK

A new survey by Frank N. Magid Associates reports a stunning and terrible problem with many Americans' understanding of hi-definition television. The Magid group claims that 43 percent of HDTV owners don't subscribe for hi-def service -- in many cases, the study suggests, because they don't know that they own a hi-definition set.

Wait -- it gets worse. Thirteen percent of respondents say that they've never even heard of high definition. If true, that would mean 39 million Americans are completely oblivious to the glories of HD programming. Is this a tragedy? A cataclysm? I don't know. I'm not a poet or a paleoclimatologist. But it does put life into perspective.

How do you explain this one to a customer?????

Most awesome post ever.

Zombie outbreak simulator

Anyone else bothered by this?

The FDIC fund, that is the money insuring your bank accounts when your bank goes under, shows a balance of -$8.4 billion. No way they goobernmint would let the FDIC fail to insure an account because there would be 1930s bank runs on every corner. But still...

recommended read

I'm not quite done with it and I'm going to reread it shortly anyways. I strongly recommend it. While not rigorously supported by a stunning bibliography, the content is compelling and makes sense to my trained sciency brain.

Bigger scandal than 9/11 ????

Did 'they' stage the fall of the Berlin Wall simply so that David Hasselhoff could film a video for "Looking for some Freedom" ??? Do we need to start looking for some loose change????

Trying to find a way to describe this weekend

Im trying to find any thing that successfully describes the annoyance of what is known locally in S. Georgia as the "gnat belt" or "gnat line"
It's quite amazing what having acres & acres of fruit that can rot will do for the population of no-see-ums

Ummmmm....

It's an advert for a German advertising agency. One that doesn't seem to mind pissing off American gangs.

Chart of the Day

This chart is the relative value of the US Dollar and the and S&P 500 since March. At first glance they look completely symmetrical, don't they? What does it mean? It means the stock market is not recovering but instead the dollar is getting weak. Good for US Exports. Will suck when gasoline is $4.00/gallon.

Does Meech read the blog?

"Indian women also run an outsize risk of unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease, including a high rate of HIV/AIDS. One cause is that Indian men's condoms malfunction more than 15 percent of the time. Why such a high fail rate? According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, some 60 percent of Indian men have penises too small for the condoms manufactured to fit World Health Organization specs. That was the conclusion of a two-year study in which more than 1,000 Indian men had their penises measured and photographed by scientists. "The condom," declared one of the researchers, "is not optimized for India."

Mainly for T-bone, but I'll listen to anyone...

tell me what you know about these.

The idea of barefoot or minimalist running intrigues me, and I've read a bunch of great things about these shoes, but didn't know if you have any experience (or know someone who has experience) with them.

My favorite part about googling this is the autocomplete really trying to guide me towards women's vibrators (or men's, I suppose if you're into prostate stimulation).

Have they finally joined our team????

Bears join the war on terror!

A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.

Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar.

The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise - police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked.

It is thought to be the first such incident since Muslim separatists took up arms against Indian rule in 1989.

The militants had made their hideout in a cave which was actually the bear's den, said police officer Farooq Ahmed.

The dead have been identified as Mohammad Amin alias Qaiser, and Bashir Ahmed alias Saifullah.

News of the attack emerged when their injured comrade went to a nearby village for treatment.

"Word spread in the village that Qaiser had been killed by the bear," another police officer said.

A joint party of the police and army personnel went into the forest and collected the bodies of the two militants.

Police say they also recovered two Kalashnikov assault rifles and some ammunition from the hideout.
