Just Wondering
Time spent drinking and watching Dylan DVDs leaves me wondering this: who was the douche that yelled "Judas!" and how does he feel about it today?

...BAC (that's Bank of America for the home-gamers) falls off a shelf. My puts are making a comeback for the first time in months. I think it's due to BHO's proposed regulation of too big to fail institutions (See example A: Bank of America) but who knows.

It's Been a While
How long has it been since I gave an economy post? Dunno but this spectacular article in Rolling Stone about Bear Raids got me thinking. If you want one sentence, then here it is: There is no recovery and it will not begin before ten years pass or Citibank/Bank of America/Wells Fargo formally collapse are are seized. If you want my rand in full, read on:
The unemployment rate is hard to grasp, but if you include all people who are unemployed and would work plus the people forced into part time jobs, we're currently between 17%-21% unemployment. This would compare to how they figured it in 1931 when it was 25%.
The stock market is rising rapidly. Scary rapidly. Don't bet against the rally like I did (Bank of America puts) because the market can stay irrational much longer than you can stay solvent. But don't put money into it, either! The best year for the DOW was 1930, one year after a crash. The market rises because they bet the recession ends soon; 9/10 recession end in a year so the market rises after the year; the 1/10 time is a disaster for investors.
Unless the goobermint just prints money, inflation is a non-issue. The money supply is so much smaller today than two years ago. Gas, gold, etc. could rise in bubble-like spurts but don't worry about it. If you worry about inflation, put 1/4 of your money into gold that you keep in your house.
Housing: Whatever. It's not getting better. The tax credit will be larger next year so wait to buy. Don't worry too much if you live in the Triangle . Be wary in Charlotte. Quit paying your mortgage in CA, FL, NV, AZ, etc.
Banks are so fooked it's ridiculous. But like the market, the banks can keep the goobermint corrupt much longer than you can protest it. Keep your credit rating. In 2014 it will pay better than any investment.
Manufacturing is improving but is not coming back in terms of employment. They're switching to machines. They're upping first shift's hours rather than hiring a second shift.
I've done the math and the GDP needs to contract by about 10%. I think we've made it 1/2 way there but the last 5% will be a slow burn (unless big banks fail/seized). Consumption is probably at its long term equilibrium now. Savings will pick up. Once people pay off their credit cards they'll use the money to save rather than spend. The new, unoccupied strip malls will go under.
The small business Renaissance will begin soon. Once commercial rents fall the unemployed will be wicked awesome with new ideas. The missing piece is the repeal of ridiculously complicated construction codes that require lots of dollars to comply (handicaps, pollution, etc.). If small businesses are exempted it's time to be an entrepreneurial.
And the number one rule of Tray Deee's forecast is to ignore it. The second rule of Tray Deee's forecast is to ignore it. The third rule of Tray Deee's forecast is give comments.

So an oil pan would have been GREAT.
Instead it looks like I cracked an oil pump seal. They have to take out and replace the water pump and timing belt to change it. Fuck.

Don't Judge Me
So teh wife and I are heading out to The Queen City to watch a dance show tomorrow. Two years ago I thought that dancing was for homosexuals and treehuggers. Since watching So You Think You Can Dance I have seen the error of my ways. Atheletism is key and there is a degree of art involved. If I were capable of producing tears then I would have dropped them after watching this piece about breast cancer.

Very cool, fun weekend.
Went home last night for my niece's birthday. We met her at a high school football game, which her BF was playing in.
After that we headed back to moms casa and shot the shit late into the night. I told her when she turned 13 that I was done lying to her, and now that she's 16, I told her she was old enough to get the straight dope, sort of quasi-adult status where she can hang out with us and hear some of the family stuff that has been off limits to her until now.
Very fun.
Then I ripped my oil pan out pulling in to get milk shakes. Oh well, c'est la vie!!!

Oh the Hummanity
Bob Dylan has a new Christmas album entitled Christmas In the Heart. From all accounts, it's a good-faith attempt to recreate a Bing Crosby album circa 1950. The Chicago Sun Times complete panned the album giving it 0/5 stars...the critic goes so far as to say "Unfortunately, when it comes to the music, the album is a complete failure." How extremely disappointing. Not Bob Dylan's album but the review since we all know a Bob Dylan album is good simply because of musical dogma. I think less of critic Jim DeRogatis, the Chicago Sun Times, and maybe even the city of Chicago.

So we moved to Sprint
Each of us got an Instinct phone
Big things I noticed -- free mobile to mobile, which is basically unlimited calling. Only home phone I EVER call is my mom, so this appears to be very good for us.
Other thing I VERY quickly discovered was the NFL mobile. I basically wet my pants @ Best Buy.

The award was made, the valedictorian committee announced from Norway of all places, on the basis of “Mr. Rabinowitz’s intention to ace every course and graduate number one in class.” In a prepared statement, young Shawn called the unprecedented award, “f---ing awesome.”
