*** SITE ADMIN NOTICE -- original post recovered!!! ***
So HEP & the QoC have their new house, and this post is evidence that their 'tubes are working!
We are all QUITE drunk -- the Uar just left, probably to go dabble in the hut tub with the Sniper.
All in all, quite a fun day -- fuckin hot, lots of manual labor, men smelling like men. Now that I think of it... why the fuck didn't I stay home and drink.
LOL.
Good times, good friends!
To us!

mitch hedburg one liners
Mitch Hedberg made a brief appearance following mulching at the sidekick's the other weekend. Contemporary Carlin? Although his drug overdose robbed us of his aged look.
Slight problem with the move...
In the excitement of buying a house, arguing with insurance, closing on the house, packing, etc we forgot to reserve a truck. As of now we have a reservation for 3 in the afternoon. They are going to call us as soon as they get something available. We are still trying to get something for the morning time. If you guys can't do afternoon I understand. This totally fucks up our plans but in the end it was our fault in failing to plan. I will make calls as soon as we get something firmed up.
As of now I will need some assistance in getting a washer and dryer noon. I got a lady in Durham who is giving her washer and dryer away as long as you will install her washer and dryer and fridge. 'Uar said that we could use his truck to pick up the washer and dryer. I am going to find a hand truck now. I got AJ with me so I need one more at noon.

Truely Uncharted Territory
So the FED wrote a paper about housing in the Great Depression and it turns out there's not all that much in common between the housing market then and now.
The Good Highlight:
1934: 48% of mortgages were delinquent
2008: 8% of morgages are delinquent
The Bad Highlight:
When accounting for inflation/deflation,
1930's: REAL resale values of did not change...the housing drop kept pace with deflation
2006-08: Real resale values have dropped by 11%
So home loans are in much better shape but this is, in fact, the first time real home values have dropped since 1900, including the Great Depression.

Upper Deck Article
Here's a nice piece on the 1989 Ken Griffey Jr rookie card by Upper Deck. What I love, though, is a line that says Upper Deck made a deliberate decision to make the players pictured on cards ending with '69' - i.e. 69, 169, 269, etc. - to have porn star names. For example, in 1992 card 269 was Dickie Thon.

Shocking Misuse of Hospital Funds
A hospital exec misused funds to comission a portrait of herself, a fact the News and Observer finds shocking. What I find shocking is how bad the portrait is. If you're gonna be found guilty of misappropriation, at least do it up right.

Moving day is scheduled for 5/31
For all who are interested I/we am moving on the 31st. I should have everything in boxes. I plan on hitting it at about 10. I say ten because I have to go get a truck stop by Rear's pick up my dresser, head to the ridge and start moving shit. Hopefully I will be back by ten.
After grabbing all boxes and cumbersome items here we also have to stop by and unload QoC's sister's storage, and there is talk of picking up a washer and dryer on the way. Should be a full day. Once we get all the large objects upstairs and into rooms I think that we are going to call it quits and start drinking beer and order something to eat for all who attend this long day.
The good news is that while we are taking the broken furniture with us it is staying in the garage until I can work on it and fix it so no going upstairs with long or tall items.

Good Gawd this is Impressive
The US Army is attempting to re-grow a finger using Pixie Dust. This article is impressive in so many ways, including this quote: "They have taken a uterus out of a dog, made one in the lab, put it back in, and had puppies," said Wolf. Researchers have also regrown a human bladder, implanted it in a person and it is working as nature intended."

This summer is gonna be out of control
If every day involves coming home, drinking & swimming, passing out and then going to dinner, I dont know if I can honestly do this for more than a week.
Also, much like Michael Corleone, I keep trying to quit the "plant thing", but they keep sucking me back in.
A neighbor behind me gave me a metric fuck ton of day lillies - the neighbors are full up, the 'Uar and the Gimp are only after shade plants, so what the hell am I supposed to do with them?
Looks like Big Russ is getting a house-warming present.
Also, Moms raided a neighbors yard and scored an unknown quantity and variety of plantatorial beings, so as soon as the box arrives, looks like the Sidekick is getting some shit planted in his yard also.

Da Porch!
What I thought was sure to be a 7-8 person work party turned out to be a three man show as The Admir0l, Sweet Dee, and myself installed his new stone(ish) back porch.
Over 12,000 lbs of stone, gravel, and sand were moved, making it like a much tinier Hoover Dam (fortunately, the loss of life in this instance was minimal).
Wondering what the hell we've gotten ourselves into.

A giant pile of stuff that needs to be moved, fortunately we've got just the place for it.

An action shot that doesn't involve Sweet Dee's ass crack (let's just say he was bending over a lot while working) (you know, I added in the parenthetical to attempt to clean up my first statement, I'm not sure I did)

The boys on break as if they had union jobs

All in all, a good time was had and Dee has 85% of a porch complete; salud!

Now I feel tiny.
I should have posted this when it happened but I was busy. On Tuesday night I got a call from the HBIC or head bouncer in charge. He told me to bring my paperwork and head to Hi5 the bar/club that I will be protecting 3-4 nights/week. I thought that this was an interview. I got there about 20 minutes early so I was just waiting at a table.
I saw the guy who had called me walk into the bar and I stood up and started to walk over to him. On my walk over to him I noticed some movement in my periph. About 15 of the biggest mother effers (my coworkers) in the damn place stood up and were closing the gap between me and them. Apparently they liked the cut of my jib or something because there was no interview. Most you know that I am larger than the average person. I usually am the largest person in the room or at least a close second. I was the second smallest person there. I was taller than about 70% of them but not by much (a few inches tops) but they had me in weight or muscle mass easily. One guy is like 7ft+ (my guess about 7ft'2in) and another is easily close to 2 1/2 ft wide if not wider. He isn't even that overweight seriously he is just a huge guy whole looks like he would love to play the piano if they made one that would accomodate his enormous fingers. I would really like to see him send a text message or type something. He must get frustrated pretty quickly.
All in all it was good but I have got to put on some weight/muscle fast or else I am going to be the bouncer that people decide to eff with when they are loaded.

Oil Bubble
So I thought the bubble would be gold but it's looking like crude oil is the primary bubble while gold is getting B-List treatment. I've got two questions for y'all:
1) How high would gasoline prices per gallon have to go before you get worried.
2) How do you feel about the crude oil price increases? Is it a bubble, a reflection of the weak US Dollar, or a fundamentally correct increase. If it's not a bubble, is this a long-term price increase or short?

I don't think they ran the thermostat of the holiday inn europa to triple digits to truly make it a Vegas like experience.

Cooking the Books
Here is a Harper's Weekly article about how the gubmit alters inflation/unemployment/GDP numbers to make them look better. I'm not a grand conspiritor here, everyone does it: Companies do it, people do it, etc. And it's not that big of a problem because actual change in inflation correlates perfectly with changes in the 'fake' inflation so we can all visualize what they talk about.
Hell, you can even use it to your benefit. It makes borrowing even cheaper than we think it already is.

Email to Gee / Dream I had last night
So Im having this dream... kind of suspenseful, scary
I had tracked down a killer, and was trying to escape/ notify the REAL authorities, cause he was a crooked cop
INCREDIBLY bad reception on my cell phone, couldnt dial 911 -- so I called you.
Im running down this 1 lane dirt road that had 12' chain link fence on both sides, and its night.
Downtown Raleigh was behind & to my right, and a golf course to my left -- so you were driving & mapquesting, trying to figure out where I was
Every now & then were little turn outs so people could turn
around, let traffic pass (1 lane dirt road -- Im very thorough in my
dreams) but several times I just ran over the top of cars
So I run over this subaru station wagon then hear you yelling.
Here's where it gets FUNNY.
You basically pull a Chinese firedrill and tell ME to drive, cause you're eating your Cosmic Cantina burrito.
Looking back the way I came, the silhouette of the bad guy / killer is coming closer
SIDE NOTE -- he had been stabbed in the shoulder when I escaped off of
the trapeze net much earlier in the dream, so had one dangling arm
So when I look in your car, its all knobs & dials & pulleys & levers --- VERY rube goldberg --and im like "Mother FUCKER!! I cant drive a subaru!"
And you're already in the passenger seat eating.
Very angry with you.

Q for the RA
Speaking of charitable organizations using a cause to generate personal gain. . .
Is it my memory, a story I remember or an embellishment of a story I remember about a guy walking around the halls of his high school with a jar collecting money to free whales trapped in a field of ice with a shrinking open water space?
And if you all look, I know that there was footage of a polar bear fishing a beluga - which are still damn huge for a toothed whale out of one. Talk about a season of food. . .

How I got back to RDU
It's been a long time since the last housing post - I've had the shakes since April - and I think it's time to fall off the wagon with this article about the Condo Market in Chicago. Back in mid-2005, I seriously considered buying a modest Loop condo (modest=2BR across from Cabrini Green for $500,000) but decided to look into the heath of the housing market before pulling the triger with my 1% down payment. And that's how I found the housing bubble that I love to hate today: I wanted to know how thousands of people making $60K could afford to buy a limitless supply of condos and the answer scared me.
So what did I do? I remembered the good ole' days when the Rear would lovingly pour ice into my bed while the Sidekick did slapshots and thought 'Boy, get yurself to Raleigh or bust!" Seriously, I wanted to buy a place and Raleigh looked pretty good in terms of comradery and relatively safe housing investment. Here I am, bitches.

So I was speaking to my niece this morning.
BTW -- she wants to go to Duke.
Chit chatting about school almost being out.
She had a B in science last year.
I asked if she had pulled that up to an A.
She got all indignant "OF COURSE!"
Then I was asking if she was valedictorian yet.
She's like "I'm only in the 9th grade!"
So I told her "Thats not the attitude that will get you into Duke. You need not just A's, but 100s. Then you need to get up in the salutatorian's grill and sing the Milkshake song"

The Admir0l and I threw back a few fauxritas, we bought a blood pressure monitor for me (my doc wants me to monitor it for some reason), picked up his humidifier for la bambina, had the 'guar over and watched 'AvP2:EB'. It's difficult to have a much fuller evening than that.
I'll try and have a new movie for next week; see everyone then.

day game outcomes
Really wish someone had been able to join us, there was a guy who couldn't run from home to first if he was being chased by a grizzly repeatedly overheckling the players. With two back to back 6 run innings by the Bulls, there wasn't much left to heckle, yet this man of genius managed to step up his game against the opposing pitchers.
And Caleb scored his second baseball, from the same outfielder.
tuesday nite had a spur of the moment game attendance. we got a pair of tix down by the home bullpen and 24 Ruggiano tossed Caleb the warmup ball when the game got going.
today Ruggiano got the ball at the end of the random relay following an infield play third out. He looked through the entire section, saw Caleb, the solo toddler in the area and tossed us the ball.
proud day for the C'ster . . .

From me to Sweet Dee:
That would be horrible if i had a VIRUS like NIMDA or a TROJAN -- that would be like a computer ingesting RICIN and other DANGEROUS CHEMICALS or some kind of metaphorical SHOE BOMB flying across the internet like a HIJACKED AIRPLANE on a JIHAD to BLOW UP your work computer. Hopefully, it wont turn out that your computer was being monitored by the FBI, NSA or PROJECT ECHELON for communications about such crimes as KILLING THE PRESIDENT. I mean, the misunderstanding that could result would be like a NUCLEAR BOMB going off in Raleigh NC on May 14, 2008 at approximately 2:45 PM, near the Belltower.
BTW -- saturday morning for a mulch run.
This Amercian Life
If you want an accessible radio explanatin of the housing mess, check out This American Life over the weekend. It explains the global problems in a sensible way and helps you understand how the sub prime housing crunch was caused by a lot more than speculators in Cali.

Great Landscaping Deals!
In a recession, cash is king. I'm ordering patio pavers that are 50%-75% off Lowe's prices. If you want to split the $60 delivery fee for a Raleigh delivery, just be in touch.
Slap bet extravaganza
Granted, I was quite drunk @ Cinco de Mayo and this may be a fever dream -- did Greg & I have a slap bet that almost went LIVE ??
Someone who was moderately sober, let me know.
Out of the blue, I remembered Luke & I arguing about wolves in India, and how much fun it was to prove something PRE-internet . Discussing this with Gee, we have now come up with a NEW slap bet -- No Marsupials in India.
Its on beeches !!!

suprise illness; minor league AAA cure
If anyone's interested, I feel an grave illness coming on wednesday that'll force me to take my family to a daytime baseball game. I picked up a pair of tickets J1 J2 in section 114 (just past the first base dugout. If anyone is game for sudden baseball illness (the day after their students take the AP chemistry exam), hop online and grap the tickets above and beside us!

best student gift ever?
I've recieved half a ton of chocolate in 10 years in chapel hill. I've also handled quite a number of gift cards and donations in my name. The funnest one arrived today. Even though the Onion killed off my favorite character of all time, Herbert Kornfeld, I will now be sporting stickers of him on my pimped out s-10 ride when I pull out of the Harrigan Court cul-de-sac ballahs turf. That's right. Kornfeld bumber sticker! School made in our graphic design studio. . .

So I am in no way even a moderately competent birder.
However, I do have a favorite bird of all time - the Indigo Bunting.
I've only seen 1 ever, up @ Centennial Campus before the "Land Rape of '02".
I honestly could not believe that something natural could have that intense of a color.

Gossip folks, and Me as a 'Chatty Kathy'
So working in a group of 16+ folks, theres bound to be gossip.
Nothing earthshattering, mainly because we really have no impact on human existence.
Also, I have made it known time & again by word and by deed, that I make no distinction between general knowledge and gossip.
Therefore, it should have come as no surprise to one of my fellow co-workers who TALKS HIS FUCKING HEAD OFF EVERY FUCKING MORNING, always with sly allusions to how much he knows, and his "sources" and all this other knowledge hording bullshit, that if I know something pertinent and relevant to one of wants or desires, I'm going to act on that information.
O.
M.
G.
Who put the fucking sand in his v-jay-jay???
So in general, I cannot be trusted with any information.
Please bookmark this post if anything you say to me in 'confidence' leaks out.
Now, to explain - part of this comes from the past association w. Scott & Meech, who were a pair of back stabbing fucks that talked immense shit about *EVERYONE* behind their backs, leaving me to the conclusion that as soon as I left a room, guaran-damn-tee they were talking shit about me.
That environment -- Very poisonous.
I will never put up with that shit again.
So, dont be overly passive aggressive. Let your anger out. Let people know when they piss you off, otherwise nothing ever changes.

Me & H.E.P. pwning beeches
H.E.P. has come up with what I believe is the greatest shenanigan ever:
He is working on getting a job as a bouncer Fri & Sat nights, and will hopefully put in a good word for the Admir0l.
"He's 6' 4", 230 and very loquacious."
Our plan -- I will guard his lower back while he makes ponderous but lethal "beech pwning" round houses.
Only requirement -- Black suits.
BLAM!!!
Thanks Sweet Dee!
All I'm saying -- watching 'Road House' this week a couple times to hone my game.

"New research shows that people who regularly use sunscreen and
avoiding sunlight may be sacrificing important vitamin D, which is made
by the skin when it's exposed to sunlight. Now, the recommendation is
to get 15 minutes of sun at the peak of the day three times a week to
help avoid a vitamin D deficiency. . . . For years, Americans have been
taught that as summer approaches, they should reach for sunscreen to
protect themselves from a scorching burn - and the skin cancer it might
trigger. But new research shows that by covering up, they may be
sacrificing important vitamin D, which is made by the skin when it's
exposed to sunlight. . . . Vitamin D deficiency is associated with
reduced bone strength and risk of fracture; a twofold increased risk of
some cancers such as colon, breast and prostate; an increased risk of
both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; worse control of diabetes for those
who have it; decreased immune function; and possibly also heart
disease."v

Live Blogging Buffalo Getting Eaten
So based on the e-mail The Sidekick sent I have decided to Live Blog my reaction to the related 8:23 You Tube video he sent as based upon the subject OOOOHHHHHHH! it may be exciting. Here we go.
9:24 AM: African Buffalo are just grazing around, but seem to be walking toward a large pack of lions. Ballsy. Real Ballsy. Not that Buffalo are smart animals, but this is stupid even for them.
9:25 AM: And of course the buffalo get ass close to the lions.. oh wait the buffalo notices them now.....shit too late! Run Buffalo! Run!!!! Wow Lions are fast and scary! Buffalos are surprisingly fast as well! Guess I would be too. Ohhhhh Shhhhhiiitttttttt...............!
9:26 AM: Oh fuck that lion just side swiped that baby buffalo into the river! Pure genius. Feel sorry for baby animals getting killed. Except for veal. Mmmmm I love baby cows.
9:27 AM: Wow 5 lions to deal with that baby buffalo!? Seems a bit much, but ok focus is good. They really aren't pulling very hard or trying to drown it. Are lions afraid of water? They are all standing around watching like they are on a construction site. Is one of the lions trying to bite its ass or toss its salad? That's not right. Come on lions get going with this!
9:28 AM: Alright now there we go, trying to drag the buffalo out of the water good strategy. HFS! WTF! is that a crocodile! It just bit the lion!. My god now it jumped out of the water and grabbed the baby buffalo. Did that crocodile just cherry pick that kill! Its like nature field day and its the tug-o-war event! Wow those lions just got their asses in gear and pulled the kill away from the croc out of the war. This is F'ing amazing!
9:29 AM: Ummm why are the buffaloes coming back? Were they not just watching? Hmmm, upon zoom out there are quite a few of them. HFS are they charging the lions?!? Oh wait its like they are NBA players. They are acting like they want to fight then pussing out. Oh wait there's Carmelo Buffalo with the cheap shot while the lion's head is turned. Whoops there's another one charging a lion. Nice job buffalo. Easy with the cocky walk though, you ain't won shit yet.
9:30AM: they are doing a nice job of surrounding, but its all just bullshit posturi............ Oh Shit I didn't know lions could fly. This is some Miami FIU shit going on. Damn look at bitches scatter! You better run lions.
**Can I just say this is the most unfuckingbelievable thing I've ever seen!**
9:31 AM: HFS is that baby buffalo still alive! Damn they just saved that shit! Baby just walked away! I can't believe this, Wow! Oh man and the buffalo aren't done! Its like they are a gang hell bent on revenge. You would think after they saved the calf, which is some humanoid shit. They would walk away from the lions, but they want a piece of there ass for the inconvenience.
9:32 AM: Damn look as those buffalo scattering beeches. Those male lions are like eh I'm leaving now. Why the lady lions always left with the shit work?
All in all this was freaking unbelievable. Sunday at 9 will be set on the Tivo.

Problem with Oceans 11 thats been bugging me
Where do the flyers come from that are in the bags that are carried out of
the vault and into the van?
Answer: Danny and Linus couldn't have taken them
down there and there is no room with the Chinese man, and they are
carried out to the van before the SWAT team appears, so they had to be
in the vault to start with? [On the DVD version the audio
commentary with Steven Soderbergh, he states that getting the bags of
flyers into the vault is an error and that even he doesn't know how
they would have gotten down there.

let the mediocrity go global
So here's the beginning of the end of my faith in my school system. There is a piece about a manadatory punitive make-up session that could make an "I" system work, but there's not guarantee for proper funding of this as they haven't properly funded or staffed a single remediation program since I've been here.
THE kicker is the new MINIMUM grade that can be assigned to students' work or to students grade reports. (in item 3.)
Anyone who has been working in a job where a measureable product must be submitted knows that a graduate of this system of education will be worthless, demanding majority pay before the first iota of work is submitted.
If we directly apply this system to my work, I'm going to get a job in a second school, report each morning to both, collect 61% of two incomes and go home and play with Caleb. . .
They've supplied literature from a couple of educational studies by folks who would be labelled as educational "consultants" I'm sure that many out there operate from a history of competent instruction and/or good intentions to introduce systems of learning that will improve student achievement and understanding. Just as I am sure that the majority of the 'consultants' and 'administrators' out there couldn't handle working in a classroom or reeducating themselves to something useful.
Here's where I express some solid love for the Admir0l. Instead of staying in something that wasn't a good fit for him, that he didn't enjoy, he flexed his muscles (which weren't as numerous and engorged back then) and trained his big brains to something else he would rather do.
Dropped in a departmental email earlier today with the names of the super, assist. super and all four secondary principals.
Regulations Policy Code 3400 Student Evaluations (Grading)
A. High School Grading Practices
1. Students will be expected to make up missed work.
PLC teams will determine common guidelines for making up missed work, including consequences, such as taking off points on an assignment, for incomplete or late work.
Students who fail to complete assignments will receive a grade of “I” and will be obliged to fulfill course requirements. Students must understand that they cannot choose not to turn in work.
2. Students will be provided opportunities for additional learning, assessment of learning and grade recovery.
Schools will develop a system that provides students additional time and support to be successful.
PLC teams will develop systematic ways for students to be re-assessed in order to demonstrate that they have mastered learning outcomes.
3. The following 7-point grading scale will be used to provide equal ranges for each grade. The lowest grade that a student can receive is an F.
• 93 – 100 = A
• 85 – 92 = B
• 77 – 84 = C
• 69 - 76 = D
• 61 – 68 = F
4. Fractions of points greater than .5 will be rounded up to the next whole number.
5. Teachers in PLC teams will agree on what constitutes mastery performance on common assessments and will assign students with similar results on a common assessment the same grade.
6. PLC teams within a subject area will agree on how homework counts as part of a nine-weeks grades, but it is not to exceed 20% of the grade.
7. Extra credit opportunities to enhance grades must be connected to learning outcomes and consistent within PLCs.

Good times! Welcome to the Summer of '08
Wee bit of a hang over -- I would have thought all the vit-a-mins in the turkey skin would have counteracted the alcohol.
Guess not.
I may be mistaken, but I believe HEP put an offer on a house last night.
Oh dear. Spinny world.
To the sofa!
