Ribby delishousness

So Harris Teeter had beef ribs on sale for like $1.25 a pound.
I threw 6 pounds in the slow cooker last night.
The delectable aroma of tender meat woke me up this morning.
Let me just say -- yummy.

Get some ribs, beeches.

Mother fucking fucking insomnia

The best I can figure is that my brain is still on PST from last week.
Im going to be @ 11 ish, then tossing & turning, reading, staring at the ceiling, etc... generally until 2:30 or 3.
Then up @ 5:30 ish.

Detroit Housing, Part Duex

How does the decline in Detroit housing hurt banks, you ask (well I pretend you did each and every day I post)? All of those Detroit mortgages were pooled and owned by an investment bank like Merrill Lynch. They aren't worth much; yesterday Merrill sold mortgages with a face value of $30.6 billion for a mere $6.7 billion (22 cents on the dollar). Uhm yeah, that's bad for Merrill.

Greguar will contend they are worth more than that but the market is depressed. Could be right but that $104,000 mortgage is being held by a $19,000 piece of collateral. The housing market must go up before the financials do. And, the way I see it, the housing market is only halfway through the descent.

What is this, you ask?

Is this good news from Cpt. Eeyore? It is, sorta. Here's an article titled "Bright Spots in the Housing Nightmare" on msn.com. If the liberal, biased main stream media is to be believed, there are only three places unaffected by housing bubble: 1) ultra high-end homes over $10 mil, 2) Texas, and 3) mid-sized cities in the Carolinas. Boo-ya!

Vicious stat -- home prices in Detroit.

Don't click just yet.

First, if I told you that mean home price in 2003 was $97,850, what would you guess mean home price in Detroit was today?

If you guessed $19,448, you'd be the big winner.

.40/gal

Yes, that's right! Yours truly just filled up his tank at .40/gal!!!! There is definitely something screwy with one of the Citgo gas stations by my house. To my knowledge gas pumps don't usually remain operational during hours in which the food/smokes/drinks portion of the station is not open. However, on this night they are and regular is going for .399999999/gal!!! Sweet!!!!! I'm sure that I'll have to update this tomorrow after the news stations get wind of this! My posse filled up three cars (granted not all totally empty, although mine was close...I needed 12 gallons) for a total of $13.07......and we'd been drinking....t'was a good night in Charlotte, NC!!!!

Good Reads

This article in Vanity Fair is a lot to take in but I found myself on seat's edge (because I'm f'ed up that way). It's a detailed look at the demise of Bear Sterns in March; the way I read is that they were done in on purpose and by Goldman Sachs. And, were it not for the actions of the US Government, led by former Goldman Sachs CEO Hank Paulson, the entire world would've ended. Anyway, if the implications are true this is a government conspiracy theory of major proportions. As it happens, Citadel Hedge Fund is also accused in this and in Aug. I am visiting a guy that works there and can ask. Did I mention this kid is 28 and, we know for a fact, makes at least $750,000 a year.

This one is for the Sidekick

I know this may technically be sports, but

it's too damn important to not share RIGHT NOW!!!!

Good Interactive Graphic

This will put savings/debt into persepective: Interactive Chart. I seriously recommend it.

From the hyperlink, 1) click on 'start' and then 2) click on 'lifetime' and then click on 'launch interactive.' Remember, all figures are in 2008 dollars. What's remarkable is 1) how much more we make, 2) how big the housing bubble is, and 3) how little we save.

Monday, July 21, 2008

My short Dark Knight review.

Easily the second best superhero movie ever made, behind only 'Batman Begins' (note of full disclosure, I have yet to see either 'Iron Man' or the new 'Hulk').

Y'all gotta get out in a canoe!

The wife and toddler went to Grandma's on Sunday so dad went fishing! Lake Mitchie is one of the two main water lakes for City of Durham. Canoe Rental was five bucks - cheaper than driving to RA's and back. Plus I didn't know if the shed is locked or if one of the paddles was still there following the Tray trip.

So about two hours into my return to redneckdom sans Nascar (forgot to bring radio and didn't know if there was a race anyways). I hear this chirp/barking sound and look over to see an otter about 15 yards away. And about a minute into all the chirp/bark commotion, two heads pop up next to it. And a moment later I hear a splash right behind me and turn to see a loggroup near the bank bouncing around like someone pulled itself along it. First otter is still barking! Poof, fourth otter head rises next to the others. They splash around a little bit and start swimming along the bank away from me.

I immediately pull up the 2lb catfish tied to the boat, just to check. Seals used to hit our salmon and rockfish coming to boat when I was a kid in Cali.

Pretty darn cool. I've seen all sorts of songbirds, Osprey pluck prey, more feeding Heron's than one can count, most of the other birds of prey chillin' along the shore, beavers, all sorts of reptiles, muskrat, deer, ugly couples making out when they thought the lack of motor noise meant no one else was in a boat near 'em, (never 'lucky(?)' enough to happen along a cute couple) and even found a GPS cache by accident during low water. That was the first time saw an otter family in the wild. Hopefully it won't be my last!

This is why I like Canoe tripping in small lakes. A little sunburn risk, boated a dozen fish (five species), ate sandwiches, drank coffee (wasn't sure how well the alcohol would be enforced on this lake - in the future, there'll be a sixer in the backpack/tackle box). And I'll probably leave the radio behind from now on. Radio probably would have kept the otter family too far away to have been noticed.

I know there's rental at lake johnson and wheeler, not sure about the smaller N Raleigh lakes, the RA has one as well. Get in the water!

I Wouldn't Say Man Crush. Yet.

So, I've got a new author that I'm really digging named Adam Sternbergh. So far as I know, he only writes for the New York Magazine but he does it well. Here's a link to a story about Eli Manning, written on the eve of the Super Bowl. He rocks Eli's bio by labeling him the model of 'Unflappable Competence.' And breaks out Archie Mannings quote, "We're not saying [Eli] is Phil Simms or anything. I just never thought he was as bad as some people thought he was." Read it.

Tonight was awesome...

I got to break up people having sex. Unfortuneately it happened at the beginning of my shift and I was bored out of my mind for the entire rest of the night. Sex in a bathroom though, not a bad night.

Linky Goodness

"The Federal Reserve has spent 25 years winning back the inflation fighting credibility that it lost during the 1960s and 1970s. Inflation has been fought so successfully that inflationary expectations are no longer even a glimmer in peoples' financial calculations. But a few more months of this, and that will start to change. The Federal Reserve will have to clamp down, hard, to prevent high inflationary expectations from being written into contracts and labor agreements. Better a moderate recession now than a really severe one when the Fed has to wring the inflation out of the economy."

Throw 'em up Boys!

Report: NFL to review tape for evidence of on-field gang signs

"There have been some suspected things we've seen," said Milt Ahlerich, the league's vice president of security, according to the Times' report. "When we see it, we quietly jump on it immediately, directly with the team and the player or employee involved to cease and desist.

Listen, I know a Milt, and believe me he is the last person I would have checking to see if people were throwing up gang signs.

What Oil Bubble?

Apparently Saudi Arabia and Iran could trade all their oil for the entire United States. A little upsetting but sounds quite similar to "The land under the Japanese Emporer's Palace could buy all of California."

Just for you, Eeyore

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Hmm... Maybe Eeyore is onto something.

Writer comment to Instapundit:

The looming recession is not a fabrication of the election-focussed MSM. It is real, and it is scary.

Start with the fact that since WWII there has never been negative YOY gasoline demand without a recession, understand that if hydrocarbon prices merely held at these levels, toal energy prices would continue to rise for 3 years due to the lags of utilities and passing along input costs (natural gas and coal, which have both doubled in the past 6 months and haven't taken even the first bites out of pocketbooks yet), and then realize these energy headwinds are childs' play compared to the contraction of credit that will slow down all businesses' investments. I fear your "Dude, Where's My Recession" series trivializes the inevitable pain that has only been temporarily delayed by the massive 2Q08 fiscal stimulus package of tax rebates.

My profession as an energy analyst and portfolio manager prohiits me from being quoted in your blog (so please don't attribute anything to me, even if you were so inclined to print my perspective) but I worry that in 6 months, there is a very high probability you will regret your cavalier attitude towards significant weakening of the underpinnings of our economy--namely consumer spending, available credit and accessible liquidity.

I finally had to work for my $$

Last Thursday I had to bounce some people. My first hour was pretty slow. I just watched an exit door at the Red Room. At midnight my replacement came in and I was a floater. I had to basically float around the bar and look for violations. My first violation was a guy that I had seen earlier in the night and he had X's on his hands. When I saw him at midnight he had no X's but he had a beer. When he saw me staring at his hands he tried to put his beer down and slide away. I got him outside and told the doorman what I had seen and they handled the situation from there.
Next was a guy with a hat. I always give people a second chance when I see them with hats on. I told the guy to keep it off or he was going to be removed and then shook his hand. About 20 minutes later he had it back on and he saw me and quickly snatched it off. I pointed towards the door and he started walking but stopped about 10 ft short. I grabbed him by the arm and led him out the side door and walked (still holding him) about 50 ft to the front and once again explained what I had seen to the head doorman and they handled the guy's complaints by telling him that he was done and that he was now trespassing.
My last guy just fucking fell asleep at the bar. He didn't really seem too drunk just sleepy as fuck he tried to resist but quickly changed his mind and left as well. Well that's about it. Really bouncing is an awesome job, you rarely work and most people listen to you and never give you shit. Occasionally girls will ask you to dance or just start dancing with you. How the fuck do you dance with an unwilling participant I will never know but it is pretty funny when it happens.

So I REALLY thought we would be in a drought!!!

And Another Thing That Pisses Me Off

Let's pretend that that Rear had a life insurance policy that paid someone named PJ $1,000,000 if he dies. Suddenly, the Raleigh Police Chief says "Due to excessive volume of murders, we're overwhelmed and, from now on, we will only investigate cop killings." Would Rear 1) feel better about surviving or 2) be scared PJ will arrange his demise? That' s how the financial markets have been positioned as of Sunday.

Is that no one seems to understand the nature of the markets have fundamentally changed since the last bear market in 2000. Since then, a new market has developed: Credit Default Swaps. They're complicated but they're essentialy life insurance for a company and their value is ~$60 trillion, much more than that of the stock market. People buy policies that pay off when the company fails.

I am now friendly with a bonafied New York Credit Default Swap dealer (we're getting a beer at Flying Saucer at 8:00 tonight if you want to come). The amount of money people are putting into banks failing is insane. And the volume is increasing.

Not only is there a legitimate bear market credit crisis going on, but there's substantially more profit in hurting companies than watching them suceed. The real money wants stock prices to go down and for targeted companies to fail. How do we learn that many banks - IndyMac, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Fifth Third, National City, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and even Wachovia - are on the verge of collapse and think the investor's momentum will bring them back? NOT-GONNA-HAPPEN...the real money is pissed that Fannie/Freddie are getting bailed out. They're fucking ecstatic that Washington Mutual will be allowed to fail.

****Author Update in Response to comment 'Wachovia is failing?'

Here is the 20-year stock chart for Wachovia, down 80% in the previous year.

Is Wachovia failing? Not in the 'it will close this weekend sense' but things aren't good in Charlotte. Along with Washington Mutual, they're the biggest holder of Option Pay Arms on the West Coast. They bought Golden West for $26 billion in 2006 (by comparison, Bank of America bought much bigger Countrywide for $4 billion in 2008). That, and they kept 100% of the mortgages they originated from bad years 2006-2008 but sold off ~90% originated from good years 2000-2005. They are also active counter-patries on Credit Default Swaps with payout obligations unknown. Their books are loaded with land mines.

On the upside, they own all these loans so they're free to modify them, unlike most other banks.

Say Wha?

Let us pretend that you have a mortgage payment, a car payment, and a perscription to fill for pills that literally save your life. You're a little short due to a job loss and can only make two payments this month and have no money for next month. Suddenly, your uncle Bernie gives you the cash for your medicine this month. In response, do you then decide to spend that cash on a nicer car? If you're a Wall St. investor, the answer has proven to be yes.

Let me tell you what bothers me about these investors today. The fact that bad news invariably leads to stock gains. Over the weekend, the goobermint essentially said, "Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac are going to fail so we will bail them out. But this is the last bail out and no one else gets one." What's Wall Street's reaction? Why a monumental increase in stock prices, of course! Sure, a complete collapse has been averted [for now] but is this really good news?

Off to the pool!!!

I might need a ride to the Not-luck tonight, depending on how much I have to drink this afternoon.

It Smells Like Bears Sterns

Jeez, today could be tough at the market. Oil hit a new trading record in Asia, gaining about 9% in the last couple days (attributed to Iranian saber rattling). The government went ahead and said they have a plan in place to take over Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. A seemingly reliabe rumor says the FDIC will shut down IndyMac (7th largest thrift) this weekend. And it's a Friday, which has been a bad day lately because investors want to sell out before Asia has time to give us a bad Monday. All and all, it's feeling a bit like early March.

What happened the last time I publicly declared a bad day? Didn't the market go up 150?

Question for Physics Types

So, I bought a new screwdriver drill bit because the old one wore out. It's the same drill, but the screws are drilled in with so much force they no penetrate a 1x6. Why is this?

The screw bit is the exact same diameter but it's about 2" longer. The package said the length was for more torque (insert joke) but it doesn't seem intuitive that the length would add to the force. I see two possibilities: 1) Physics can explain and/or 2) the bit isn't worn down so the tighter screw bit-screw connection makes gives it more force.

Please advise.

The Futue of American Banking

So yeah, the goobermint is going to own all the banks pretty soon. Here's a 10-year chart of the Freddie Mac stock value:

Just so you dont miss it, that part on the right is the 'company' losing 87% of its value in 9 months. This drop is directly correlated to housing price declines.

Usually when a company goes to zero it's nothing special, they're bankrupt or out of business. What happens when this company (or Fannie Mae) reach zero? Something a smidgit different; the United States goverenment has pretty much said this company can't fail. If it does, then the goobermint will take all their assets/debt onto its books. That figure amounts to about $12 trillion US Dollars.

Let's put this drop into perspective...here's a chart for Indymac Bank that looks pretty similar.

Indymac has the exact same business model but not government guarentee. Indymac went under on Friday. Following the curves, I'll give Freddie Mac 4-6 more months.

ok, 72 hours as parents is quite a challenge

QoC went and got her sister's kids (ages 5 and 6) on Monday morning. We just returned them today. WOW. We had a lot of fun but I quickly realized that my dad was not a crazy man. I always thought that my dad just liked going around the house and turning off lights and closing doors. After about 2 hours with kids I found myself doing the same thing.

In three days we did the following:
-the pool twice
-the movies
-pullen park
-buffalo athletic park
-watched several kids movies
-read books
-played/mauled the cats whenever possible, they don't really have the petting thing down just yet.

It was an action packed few days but now I need sleep and cold beer.

Kids' Exchange is a great consignment sale IF you have a couple of particular items in mind that you wouldn't mind getting used (for a ton less than new). It seems to be heavily subscribed and the crediting-to-sellers system creates hellish lines.

We've got some items in mind that Caleb seems ready to use - toy sets/scenes//play furniture//outdoor toys that we're seeking in particular. So we'll probably go. The invite to go with us is there.

I wouldn't recommend it if you didn't have something particular in mind. It's like the biggest yard sale ever for just kids' stuff.

Additionally, there's the opportunity to sell stuff if you're ready to move some things on at a bit of profit, but don't want to run your own yardsale/ebay ish thing.

Only in the Emergency Department at Massachusetts General Hospital, after the doctors started swarming, and one told her she needed surgery now, did M. learn what had happened. She had scratched through her skull during the night—and all the way into her brain.

I knew the numbers were bad, but I didn't know they were this bad. Throw in a solid 8th grade education, a year or two of college and a first paycheck exceeding my earnings of ten years and you've got many a twenty-three year old multimillionaire in ridiculous debt at twenty-seven.

Response

So here's an article that compares our current 'recession' to past recessions, including the disputed 2001-2003 recession, on msnbc.com. Please note, I agree with much of what's said here except for one key point: the author uses the unemployment rates for comparisons in all years from 1970 to 2008. I don't think he can do this!

He compares 1990's unemployment rate of 7.8% and 2001's of 6.3% to today's 5.5%. Reasonably good comparison, have at it. The only problem is that he's picking the absolute trough for these recessions and today's 5.5% probably won't be the worst rate.

He says that in 1982, unemployment was 10.7% and then compares it to today's 5.5%. Wrong. If we used the same methodology employed in 1982, then the unemployment rate in 2008 would be 9.7%. The difference between 2008's unemployment rates of 5.5% and 9.7% involve how we define and unemployed person. For example, let's say your company cuts your hours from 40/week to 20/week but keeps you on staff. Today you're considered employed but in 1982 you weren't. Another example would be someone who gets laid off and then takes a bridge job at Walmart making $7/hour...today you're considered employed and it in 1982 you weren't.

My opinion is that the gubmint is overstating everything. This is allowed in statistics because the statisician is really producing a range of viable data points. What's happened is that the reported number has shifted from the mid-point of all plausable outcomes (1982) to the most optimistic of all outcomes (2008).

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest!

So luckily enough for me I happened upon the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The defending Champion is actually American and took the title away from Kobayashi who had won it from 2001-2006. Also, because it seems 12 minutes was too much time for these people and it was felt that eating 60+ hot dogs in that time frame might be too dangerous (you think?), they decided to shorten the time frame to 10 minutes.

Long story short Joey Chestnutt and Kobayashi (Not from the usual suspects) blow away the field and in 10 minutes both eat 59 hot dogs and buns. HFS!

That's right the first ever tie!

The question is how does one break a tie like this?

Well it seems that they make them wait 5 minutes to let everything settle in their stomachs and then tell them who ever eats these 5 hot dogs and buns the fastest wins. Meanwhile, once they find this out they begin shoving their midsections down with their hands and essentially punch themselves in the stomach.

I think I need to pause this to gather myself (I'm just watching this). This may end tragically. Back in a few minutes with an update.

***Update***

Joey Chestnut wins the Dog-Off, by the slimmest of margins!

They begin to interview these guys. These are the most extreme meat sweats I've ever seen. These guys are so pasty white. Kobayashi (who has a translator) tells us that to fight an epic battle with the honorable Chestnut in the most noble of human struggles has allowed him to ascend the greatest of mountains in the god's eyes. (I'm paraphrasing here with my limited knowledge of the Japanese language). Chestnut tells us the Kobayashi wanted it but he needed it (Again I'm paraphrasing with my limited knowledge of the English language).

Both are doubled over and are looking bad. We may be looking at a little Mexican boxer coma situtation here (Too soon?). Does anyone in the crowd have a stomach pump?

It looks like they'll be replaying this all day on the Deuce (Meanwhile what is that like for these guys after something like this? Let's just skip it). Enjoy all!

***ALERT for those with Time Warner's DVR's***

In my abject excitement watching this, I stumbled upon how to skip ahead 15 minutes chunks at a time. As I shielded my eyes from the carnage and pushed the fast forward button at the same time to move past it, I seemed to have held it down for 2-3 seconds and it skipped ahead. This seems to work for both rewind and fast forward. If you continue to hold it down it will continue to skip. This was one of my pain points since they changed the software for the DVR's. It's the little things that make me happy. Hope this helps some of you out there.

NINJA SIGHTING!!!

The question is ... if a Ninja is actually sighted, is he/she still a Ninja or just a camp counselor dressed in black?

Gee & I are in complete agreement that this theorem may actually prove the Schrodinger Cat quandry once and for all.
One cannot be both a ninja AND a camp counselor at the same time.
So he WAS a ninja before he was sighted, then his ninja-ness settled into its lowest state of loser-isity.

Brilliant!

Givin' a shout out to my boy Eyeore

Hardly a Depression

The most hilarious stat for me is that during the Roaring 90's, unemployment averaged 5.6% or 5.8%. During Arbusto's stint in office, I dont think its even been OVER 5.6%.
The sky is falling !!!

LOL --- Ravi makes me laugh

Gee & I generally toss around F bombs left & right

Sheesh. Thats kind of a high standard to meet.

I almost cant wait to get my scanner working

So my crazy assed neighbors that want me to cut down my gigantic 30+ year old oak tree sent me a redneck version of a certified letter.
They are basically demanding I cut the tree down because of global warming.
I shit you not -- as soon as the scanner is working, I'll post their letter, sans name.

If You Care About Such Things

Today will be fascinating for the stock market. European Central Bank raised their interest rates because inflation is out of control, oil has shot up to $145, and the US will release job numbers. I think the European rates will hurt US stocks because the USA will have to match the increase. If the jobs number is poorer than expected, stocks could drop a ton. Today could be the day where the DOW drops under 11,000. Or it could go up 300. Or, just maybe, all the investment bankers are on vacation and nothing will happen. Regardless, I've pegged Tuesday as the problematic day but it could be today or Monday. All I know is that the stock market won't go down tomorrow.

Im not sure if this is Deuce worthy or not

The 1970's Were Nothing Like Today...

Mainly because society has advanced beyond thinking TNT will solve any problem. Here's a pretty good video of a whale being decimated by dynamite circa 1975.

When will people take the zombie menace seriously???

Umm... I'm not moving to Durham anytime soon.

Durham Democratic Party official accused in rituals

DURHAM --Allegations that a local Democratic official and her husband were involved in satanic rituals that included shackling people to beds, caging them and depriving them of food and water have horrified county party leaders. Joy Johnson, 30, a third vice-chairwoman of the Durham County Democratic Party and vice chairwoman of the Young Democrats, was charged Friday with two counts of aiding and abetting.
