Birding heaven!
I havent seen hardly ANY birds besides robins in weeks if not months, and now my yard is inundated with about 10 different species so far.
Are you shitting me?!?
Oh good lord! There are a lot of of people in Asia. Even if we only count northern mainland Asia (Ural mountains to Eastern China) that is a conservative 1.5 billion people translating into 120 million descendants of Khan.
The current population of all of Asia is 4 billion people translating into 320 million descendants of Khan. The mongols did make it all the way to eastern Europe and ran roughshod over the middle east as well.
Well I guess this makes sense as we do have one in our midst :)
One Quarter and Counting
As expected, the Commerce Department announced this morning that the economy contracted in the last quarter. The 0.3 percent contraction was smaller than expected (it approximately equaled the contraction of the third quarter of 2001), but consumer spending declined for the first time in 17 years (and saw the biggest decline in 28 years), and the decline in spending on non-durable goods (like food and clothing) was the largest since 1950; all of which suggests another contraction in the current quarter is likely.

Did I miss out on "Fall back" ???
I assume that since Congress fucked everything up, last night was NOT the fourth Saturday in October. In fact, I dont believe last night was a Saturday. I'll have to check.
I guess this is one benefit of being on the dole -- having a time frame of reference is for suckas.
Anyway, at least my microwave & thermostat clocks have a slim chance of being correct.

Lest there be any doubt the boy is Tzom's son
Kind of fucking hilarious.
Update on my Thoughts
More than anything, I'm calmed by one thing and one thing only: Wall St. fooked the average American good. But they were respectful enough to fook the average Chinaman, Russian, and Euro-Zoner way worse than us. We're still the world's leader and it's not gonna change this time around.
Also, watch for inflation to pick up in 1-2 years. It'll probably just offset the 2007-2009 deflation but don't get caught off guard. My advice remains this: put all your money into paying off variable rate loans. Do not pre-pay on fixed rate loans (mortgage) but be ready to refi if rates drop more than .5% below your current rate. Keep your cash in State Employees Credit Union money market accouts or cds. Prepare to watch the world starve.

Tell you honestly -- Thomas the Train freaks me out
EVERYONE is happy, except for this guy that wont give James his shoestrings to fix a broken pipe.
Well, thats all for Day 1 of the Babysitter Chronicles.
Elmo apparently has 2 hands
Just for fun, I tried out C Monster's training crapper. It takes a lot of effort to stand back up, but all in all I think it was an enjoyable experience.

Is House the new Walker, Texas Ranger???
Last time I had a 'vacation', I watched an inordinate amount of WTR, and by the end of 2 months I was ready to start arresting felons and deporting messicans.
This time, I think Im ready to start a new career in diagnostic medicine.
I mean, I already have 2.5 years of vet school spousery under my belt, and cats & dogs are sort of like people in that they are all mammals.
Im rearing to go !!!
Anyway. The man has NO sense of decency. He is a word that Im not even sure of, but Im pretty sure it means people that are bad and wont change and have no empathy for the good deeds others do for them.
Oh, and we both love the Class C narcotics.

Got a jolt of adrenaline last night
About an hour after starting this guy walks right up to bar at the waitress station. I tell him that they will not serve him there and that he needs to move because waitresses need to be able to work exactly where he is standing. He turns around and give me this, "Chill bro! ... You don't fucking know me! Just leave me alone." I walk up on this guy and cross my arms and breathe on the guys neck giving him a few seconds before I remove him. I am probably like 1 inch from this guy. He pretends not notice me looming ominously behind him and reaches into his coat and pulls out his money clip and tries to wave down an bartender to get a drink. I grab his shoulder and tell him that no one will serve him there and that he needs to move and he needs to move now. He tells me that "I have money and bartenders always serve people with money. Back up and leave me alone." He then turns around again. I immediately yell "SIR!" He half jumps and then looks at me. I put my hand firmly on his shoulder and turn him toward the door and push him in the direction of the door. At this point I was fucking mad and I just knew that this preppy assfuck was going to try me and I was soooo ready. I could feel my hands start to shake a little from the adrenaline in my system. He tried to stop walking at one point our our journey out of the club. He tells me that he "didn't do anything" and wants "to know where we are going." I tell him he is done and that he is going home and he bristles up on me. I shove him towards the door and he gets the picture and continues out without anymore bs except to tell me to get my hands off of him. My response was to push one more time.
All in all no real badassery but I haven't felt that a fight was imminent in a LONG time.

| Lancaster, Calif. - The folks who silenced the nation's first ''musical road'' are singing a different tune. Workers on Wednesday began carving grooves on Avenue G that will produce notes of the ''William Tell Overture'' when cars drive over them. The high desert city north of Los Angeles placed the grooves on another road, Avenue K, last month for a Honda commercial. |

File under "Next Big Thing"
From everything I hear from my sources, the two big breakthroughs that will just be life-changing, if they are actually possible, will be long term storage of generated electricity and "room temperature" semiconductors.

From Gee, to the Admir0l.
Wee, sleeket, cowran, tim'rous beastie,
O, what panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty,
Wi' bickering brattle!
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
Wi' murd'ring pattle! I'm truly sorry Man's dominion
Has broken Nature's social union,
An' justifies that ill opinion,
Which makes thee startle,
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
An' fellow-mortal!
I doubt na, whyles, but thou may thieve;
What then? poor beastie, thou maun live!
A daimen-icker in a thrave 'S a sma' request:
I'll get a blessin wi' the lave,
An' never miss't!
Thy wee-bit housie, too, in ruin!
It's silly wa's the win's are strewin!
An' naething, now, to big a new ane,
O' foggage green!
An' bleak December's winds ensuin,
Baith snell an' keen!
Thou saw the fields laid bare an' wast,
An' weary Winter comin fast,
An' cozie here, beneath the blast,
Thou thought to dwell,
Till crash! the cruel coulter past
Out thro' thy cell.
That wee-bit heap o' leaves an' stibble,
Has cost thee monie a weary nibble!
Now thou's turn'd out, for a' thy trouble,
But house or hald.
To thole the Winter's sleety dribble,
An' cranreuch cauld!
But Mousie, thou are no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!
Still, thou art blest, compar'd wi' me!
The present only toucheth thee:
But Och! I backward cast my e'e,
On prospects drear!
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
I guess an' fear!
So Gee is amazed at how limber I am...

2nd look at Cloverfield
After watching Cloverfield again, I come out with the same feeling -- its a Action Adventure movie from the point of view of Joe Six Pack, and how normal people would react to the end of the world.
Best scene/example of this -- near the end, two central characters are doing a diary, and you hear bombs & screams off to their left and THATS NOT THE POINT.
Kind of awesome.
I would actually be one to argue that even LESS monster would make the movie better.

Real DOW Value
At that time, the DOW was at 13,000. To get back to the average, we need a 50% reduction which takes us to DOW 6,500. I would say that such a correction would be in line with that of the Great Depression, maybe a smidget worse when looking at in percentage terms. I would also argue that inflatiion exceeds the official rate, meaning the correct target is DOW 7,000 or 7,500.Anyhow, the real takeaway here is that Greenspan shat his own bed by allowing a bubble to build in 2000.
Just to Prove I'm the Alpha Bear
Can I Take My Trough Post Back?
Oh, and what about the checks due for the failures of Washington Mutual, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Icelandic Banks, and the Nation of Iceland? And the little thing of Ford and General Motors? Oh, and there are also a metric butt load of similar assurances for real estate investments...you know the subprime loans that are defaulting at over 40%?
Read anything by Satyajit Das and you'll be scared right now.
Don't Freak Out
this is a ferocious bear market, but, so far, it is an almost exact repeat of what happened after the collapse of the .com bubble about 5 years ago. In fact, if we were to repeat that experience, we would see further declines from where we are today:
On the other hand, Manzi writes, you should be concerned about:
the ever-growing TED Spread, as per a prior post. It is now well over 400 basis points, or about 50% above its historical peak at the time of the 1987 stock market crash, and about 10 times its “normal” level. It has continued to rise every week throughout the past month, indicating further worsening of the credit crisis, and rising perceived risk of contagion. We’ve injected so much debt into the system over the past decade that not only can’t we borrow our way out of the consequences of the real estate bubble popping, but we’re going to have to start paying off a lot of the existing debt in the face of a poor economy. What Paulson and Bernanke are doing is to make this adjustment only painful instead of catastrophic.
Bold Call
***Update by worst of it, I mean today is the DOW trough..7,882.51 or whatever today's low is. Mark it. But I think it'll be years and years before we see 10,000 again.

Makes you proud to be an American! If you had purchased $1000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago you will have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in AIG one year ago you will have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago you will have $0.00 today. But if you had purchased $1000 worth of beer one year ago drank all the beer then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund you will have received $214.00. Based on the above the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg. A recent study found that the average American walks about 90 0 miles a year. Another study found that Americans drink on average 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that on average Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon

Well, no more shopping at Food Lion
My MVP # is XXXXXXXXXX
If you want to check and see how much money I spend weekly, generally at store 4317 , thats fine.
I will no longer be shopping there, or at any other Food Lion.
Harris Teeter, while more expensive , will be getting all of my service & money.
I have RARELY bought meat at Food Lion.
This is the 2nd time, both at that store, that I have had bad meat.
I took my purchase back this afternoon -- I dont even want a refund.
All I did was walk in, hand the package, including the green gizzard, back to the manager, tell him it was bad, and leave. I will not be going back.
Thanks,

Not going to be surprised if I run into my 4th bout of food poisoning in the past 2 ish years. The gizzard sort of "plooped" when I touched it and spooged green ichor on my shirt.
So now I'm trying to decide if I need to vomit up everything I ate before-hand.
Very very angry.
Well
I think it's okay to let the dollar-cost averaging stock buy to begin.

Admir0l, prepare to be boarded!
Somebody has been watching "Inside Man"
Not that Im the sharpest tool in the shed, but I honestly cant see any holes in this plan.
Any idea how much we drank last night?
My manager asked me if I was hung over, and I told him only rookies get hungover.
Professionals get "Lean overs".
I may have also mentioned to him that I was still drunk.
Luckily enough, it appears we are going to do this again in <8 hours.
Thanks guys, you're the best!

Some Interesting Market Facts
A. The market was ebullient despite a lackluster economy, fueled by overexuberant "momentum" investors.
B. The dollar was falling sharply, and worries were mounting about the U.S. budget deficit.
C. Institutional investors relied on automated trading programs known as portfolio insurance that led them to ditch stocks at the same moment.
D. Some combination of the above.
ANSWER: D, all of them, according to John Neff, former Vanguard Windsor manager in his book, "On Investing," who rightly predicted at the time that the drop wouldn't have long-lasting ramifications on the economy.
Who knows if the above will be the case in this situation. On 10/19/87 the Dow was down 23% in one day. On 9/29/08 the market was down about 7%. Which one ends up worse?
Another market fact.
Since 1960, the average bear market has taken stocks down about 31% before they hit bottom, according to Ned Davis Research in Venice, Fla. Was the decline of 1973-1974 above or below this average?
A. above
B. below
ANSWER: A, at 45%. Back then, the Arab oil embargo helped puncture the "nifty fifty" big-company stocks. Stagflation -- a combination of double-digit inflation and economic sluggishness -- proved hard to shake. The Watergate scandal added to the malaise.
Similar to the current situation now. Which will it be? Who knows? That's right. No one does. the media and psychology of the market will determine it.

F You Liddy Dole
I absolutely cannot believe the gall of the members of the US Senate. First you and your colleagues are going to stick us with 700 billion in bailout fees, then just because you think we're chumps, you decide to throw in the following:
- Virgin Island and Puerto Rican Rum (Section 308)
- American Samoa (Sec. 309)
- Mine Rescue Teams (Sec. 310)
- Mine Safety Equipment (Sec. 311)
- Domestic Production Activities in Puerto Rico (Sec. 312)
- Indian Tribes (Sec. 314, 315)
- Railroads (Sec. 316)
- Auto Racing Tracks (317)
- District of Columbia (Sec. 322)
- Wool Research (Sec. 325)
Good riddance when you lose the election. At least then, we'll know that we are represented by a D Democrat instead of an R Democrat.
Enjoy your retirement.

Two Things
2) Remember about 8 months ago when I said there are three stages to reporting an event like this? To refresh, stage 1 was where the event's impact is largely misunderstood and deemed no threat. Stage 2 is when the reporters have it right. And stage 3 is when the reporters extrapolate current events to go too far? Well, I think we're now entering stage 3 where you should largely ignore the main stream media reports. Take this article about the US Government defaulting on its debt. It goes a bit far. And, for the record, the US Government will never default on its debt because we can print our way out of it. Now, if we were taking bets on US Dollar hyperinflation, I might put a dollar on red.
